In Indonesia, the role of cooperatives in national economy is not quite prominent yet. The existing cooperatives are still small and difficult to develop. Besides, the number is still small in comparison to state-owned companies and private companies.

There are a number of factors which make cooperatives in Indonesia difficult to develop, some of which are the people's low awareness of cooperatives, lack of capital, and low quality of human resource owned by the cooperatives. This chapter will discuss what cooperatives are and how they should be managed. After studying this chapter, students and teachers are expected to love cooperatives.

Di Indonesia, koperasi belum begitu tampak berperan dalam perekonomian nasional. Koperasi-koperasi yang ada cenderung kecil dan susah berkembang. Selain itu, jumlah yang ada pun tidak sebanyak BUMN dan BUMS.

Sulit berkembangnya koperasi di Indonesia disebabkan beberapa faktor, di antaranya rendahnya kesadaran berkoperasi masyarakat, belum sempurnanya modal untuk pengembangan, dan rendahnya kualitas SDM yang berada dalam koperasi itu sendiri.

Pada serpihan ini diperkenalkan apa itu koperasi, dan bagaimana pengelolaannya. Diharapkan dengan adanya bahan ini siswa dan guru menjadi mengenal dan mengasihi tubuh perjuangan yang berjulukan "Koperasi."

The basic concepts of cooperatives include the definition, basic principles, basis, value, purposes and roles. As the only form of company adopting the familial value, cooperatives are expected to become the driving motor of national economy.

Konsep dasar koperasi di sini selain meliputi pengertian, juga meliputi prinsip dasar, landasan koperasi, asas, tujuan, serta tugas koperasi. Koperasi sebagai satu-satunya tubuh perjuangan yang berasas kekeluargaan dibutuhkan menjadi motor penggagas perekonomian nasional.

The word cooperative derives from the word cooperation which is formed from the words co that means together or common and operation which means an effort or activity. So, etimologically, cooperative means a common effort. 

Kata koperasi berasal dari bahasa Inggris cooperation yang terbentuk dari kata co artinya bersama, dan operation artinya perjuangan atau kegiatan. Jadi, secara bahasa artinya perjuangan bersama.

The first cooperative was born in Germany as a credit cooperative which was built to improve the living condition of farmers and low-level workers who were increasingly troubled by the condition of liberal economy which exploited them. Cooperatives also developed in a neighbouring country of Germany, that is England.

Koperasi lahir prittama kali di Jerman dalam bentuk koperasi kredit yang didirikan oleh - petani dan buruh. Koperasi ini didirikan untuk memperbaiki kehidupan para petani dan buruh kecil yang semakin terjepit dengan kondisi perekonomian liberal yang mengeksploitasi kaum buruh. Koperasi berkembang pula di negara tetangga Jerman, yakni Inggris.

In England, a consumptive cooperation was built by some factory workers. Since England was a greater colonial state than Germany, the term cooperative which is an English work is more widely spread than the German word fir it.

Di Inggris koperasi konsumsi didirikan oleh para buruh pabrik.Karena Inggris sebagai negara kolonial yang lebih besar daripada Jerman, istilah cooperative yang ialah kata dari bahasa Inggris lebih menyebar luas dibanding istilah koperasi dalam bahasa Jerman.

In Indonesia, the first cooperative developed from a lielping bank' which was called "hulpen spaar bank" in Dutch and it was built by R. Aria Wiriaatmadja in Purwokerto in 1896 with the help of an official of the Dutch colonial government, the assistant regent of Purwokerto named E. Siedenburg.

Di Indonesia koperasi ada saat ada "bafik penolong " yang dalam bahasa Belandanya dikenal "hulpen spaar bank" yang didirikan oleh R. Aria Wiriaatmadja pada tahun 1896 di Purwokerto dengan dimenolong oleh pejabat pemerintahan Belanda, ajun residen di Purwokerto berjulukan E. Siedenburg.

During the colonial era, cooperatives met a lot of obstructions, especially from the colonial government which did not want to see the welfare of the indigeneous people improving.

Koperasi di masa penjajahan banyak menemui kendala terutama dari penjajah yang tidak menginginkan kesejahteraan rakyat pribumi dapat meningkat.

According the Law No. 25 of 1992 Concerning C000peratives, a cooperative is defined as a company the members of which are individuals or cooperative companies, the activities are based on the principles of cooperative and it is a form of people's economic movement which adopts a familial principle.

Pengertian koperasi berdasarkan UU No. 25 Tahun 1992 perihal. Perkoperasian yaitu tubuh perjuangan yang beranggotakan orang-orang atau tubuh aturan koperasi dengan melandaskan kegiatannya berdasarkan prinsip koperasi sekaligus sebagai gerakan ekonomi rakyat yang berdasar atas asas kekeluargaan.
